A security incident on Sunday caused a temporary ground stop and the deployment of military aircraft at Palm Beach International Airport, where Air Force One was scheduled to fly back to Washington, DC with the President on board.
Initially, reports on social media claimed that a drone breached the airspace near Air Force One.
Video from a Delta Airlines flight at Palm Beach International shows a pilot announcing a ground stop, telling passengers, “apparently there was like a drone that came in too close,” and that “they had to scramble some helicopters to go and investigate that.”
According to the White House press pool, the motorcade departed Trump International Golf Course at 2:15 p.m.
Now, the New York Post has reported that there was no drone, according to the White House and Secret Service.
Instead, the issue was an aircraft that was “out of communication” with air traffic control, and there was no risk to the President, who was playing golf at Trump International Golf Course at the time, or the First Lady.
Per the New York Post:
However, the White House and Secret Service said the incident did not involve a drone — but a private plane that lost communications.
“A general aviation aircraft was briefly out of communication with the air traffic control tower at Palm Beach International Airport, but contact was ultimately established and the ground stop was lifted,” a White House official told The Post.
“There was no drone incursion or concern regarding Air Force One, which is not slated to take off until this evening.”
Secret Service told The Post that “At no point was there any risk to AF1 or the President’s safety.”
According to Fox News, the private plane entered the secure airspace, and F-16 fighter jets had to use flares to get the pilot’s attention and divert the plane.
