Starmer survived the worst day of his premiership – but for how long?
The standard narrative going on is that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer ‘strong-armed’ his cabinet to support him – but it’s not that simple.
Tim Stanley wrote in The Telegraph that ‘The Cabinet members looked happy to me, but then they should. They saved Keir Starmer. Now they own him’, while The Daily Mail splashed in its headline that Starmer only got ‘a stay of execution’.
True, highly unpopular Starmer has vowed to resist: ‘Every fight I’ve been in, I’ve won’ – but bravado aside, he is still in the line of fire over his inexcusable choice of Jeffrey Epstein’s friend Lord Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the US.

The Telegraph reported:
“On a dramatic day in Westminster, Sir Keir used a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) to tell his MPs to move on from the Mandelson scandal and come together in the fight against Reform UK.
The Prime Minister’s future in No 10 was thrown into doubt after Anas Sarwar, the Scottish Labour leader, became the first senior party figure to demand his resignation.”

Daily Mail reported:
“Cabinet ministers had refused to publicly back the embattled Prime Minister for more than 24 hours after [Chief of Staff] Mr. McSweeney’s dramatic departure. Private discussions were held about the possibility of replacing him with an interim leader such as Defense Secretary John Healey.
But, with leadership rivals not ready to make their move and financial markets wobbling over the prospect of a chaotic contest, they finally bowed to No 10’s demands to issue public statements of support.
In a belated flurry of posts on social media, which began as Mr. Sarwar got to his feet, every member of the Cabinet gave the Prime Minister their broad support.”
