President Trump on Saturday said he would still send the National Guard to New York to deter criminals if necessary, as New York City’s Democratic Socialist Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, gears up to be sworn in as Mayor on January 1, 2026.
This comes after the President’s meeting with Zohran Mamdani, following which the two emerged and appeared to agree to work together for the benefit of New York. Trump, surprisingly, even told reporters that he expects to work with Mamdani on crime and illegal immigration.
“We’re going to work together. We’re going to make sure that if there are horrible people there, we want to get them out,” Trump said when asked about their clashing views on ICE and immigration.
“I think he wants to get them out, maybe more than I do, so we’ll work together. We discussed it at great length.”
Then, on Saturday morning, President Trump spoke to reporters before departing the White House en route to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where he will tour the golf courses and meet with professional golfer and golf course designer, Jack Nicklaus, “to try to reinstitute the golf courses,” he said.
During the press gaggle on the White House South Lawn, one reporter asked if he is still planning to deploy the National Guard to New York, and he confirmed that he will “if they need it.”
“Right now, other places need it more, but if they need it. We had a very good meeting yesterday. We talked about that,” Trump said.

Trump and Mamdani held a press conference on Friday, where they appeared friendly with each other, both emphasizing that the meeting was “productive,” with Trump going a step further and describing it as “great.”
“The meeting that we had focused not on places of disagreement, which there are many, and also focused on the shared purpose that we have in serving New Yorkers,” Mamdani said. “And frankly, that is something that could transform the lives of eight and a half million people, who are currently struggling under a cost of living crisis, with one in four living in poverty.”
“We have one thing in common: We want this city of ours that we love to do very well,” Trump noted early in the press conference.
Trump later said that Zohran is “going to change” and that he may “surprise some conservative people, actually.” He continued, “I feel very confident that he can do a very good job.”
