Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin revealed on Saturday that some Transportation Security Administration employees are actually sleeping in their cars, apparently outside of the airports, to avoid spending money on gas and driving home while they work with no paycheck during the government shutdown.

The shutdown became the longest in history on Wednesday after closing its 35th day. The previous record was set in Trump’s first term at 34 days.

Because of this, federal employees are not receiving paychecks.

On Friday, the Senate Democrats blocked a proposal from Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) that would put federal workers and the military back on payroll as the government shutdown continues its streak as the longest in history.

Per Fox, Johnson “tried to advance a modified version of his ‘Shutdown Fairness Act’ bill that would see federal workers and the military paid now and during subsequent government shutdowns. However, the bill failed 53-43 with 3 Democrats defecting to support the bill. Georgia Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, and Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico voted for the bill.”

This was after Democrats blocked the bill last month, claiming they wanted furloughed workers to be included. However, after Johnson made these revisions, Democrats still voted it down!

McLaughlin joined Fox’s Kayleigh McEnany on Saturday to share how severely this shutdown is impacting not just travelers at airports, but the employees who are there to keep them safe.

WATCH:

McLaughlin: With each passing day, American travelers are really going to be facing increased delays and increased implications that happen because our TSA workers are going without pay. As you mentioned, we have talked to many officers, who they are sleeping in their cars. They have just tens of dollars left in their bank account. It really is becoming a huge issue, and they’re having to face the question, do they put gas in their car to get to work to serve the American people, or do they stay back at home so that they can pay for groceries for their family?

McEnany: The fact of the matter is, Senate Democrats continue to put the American traveler in this terrible position. They also put the federal workers, who serve Americans each and every day, now are going on historic days without pay.

Trisha, you just said there are TSA workers sleeping in their cars.

McLaughlin: That’s right. And again, you just mentioned Ron Johnson presented a bill just yesterday that would have paid for federal workers and put them out of this position, and they’re sleeping in their cars.

This is even more reason for Senate Republicans to follow what the President has called for and terminate the filibuster.

Trump has repeatedly called on Senate Republicans to invoke the “nuclear option” and terminate the filibuster. This would allow the Senate to immediately reopen the government and pass key legislation such as election integrity measures and other bills that Democrats would never agree to, Trump argues.

“I wouldn’t have been in favor of that a long time ago, but you know, the Democrats are going to do that, and most of you will admit the Democrats are going to do that,” Trump told reporters on Friday. “So why aren’t we doing it? And I think only a foolish person would be against that, especially when you realize that these are crazed people.”

However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune and several Republicans are defiantly taking a stand against Trump’s calls to terminate the filibuster. They would rather wait until the Democrats have power so they can pass their radical agenda.
