On MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House,” Atlantic staff writer Tom Nichols frantically warned that President Donald Trump could wield unconstrained power, potentially using the U.S. military as his personal tool to target opposition.

Nichols specifically claimed that Trump might deploy the military to “kill anyone” he desires, framing it as a normalization of authoritarian tactics. The discussion on the show speculated that Trump views the military not as a national defense force but as a private army for personal vendettas.

Host Alicia Menendez, daughter of Sen. Bob Menendez, participated in the segment where Nichols outlined scenarios of Trump targeting Americans domestically.

Separately, Rep. Eric Swalwell demanded that any Democrat presidential candidate in 2028 must pledge to demolish Trump’s newly constructed White House ballroom. Swalwell’s call came in response to Trump’s $250 million ballroom project, which he portrayed as an extravagant misuse of resources that future leaders should commit to tearing down.

The California Democrat suggested this pledge as a litmus test for 2028 nominees, emphasizing opposition to Trump’s architectural additions to the White House. Swalwell’s statement faced mockery from conservatives, who labeled it as “ridiculous” and indicative of TDS over Trump’s initiatives.

Both Nichols’ claims and Swalwell’s demand highlight escalating political rhetoric that may lead to more political violence.
