Hypocrisy Alert: Sen. Dick Durbin—Who Blocked Epstein Client List—Now Demands Release of Recordings Between Ghislaine Maxwell and DOJ

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), the same man who worked to block the release of Jeffrey Epstein’s explosive client list, is now demanding that the Department of Justice (DOJ) cough up recordings, transcripts, and notes from its private, high-level interviews with convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell.

Durbin, who helped bury the names of Epstein’s elite friends and enablers, suddenly wants transparency… now that Donald Trump’s DOJ is involved.

Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime accomplice and the convicted recruiter of underage girls for his elite sex-trafficking ring, sat down for two intensive days of questioning with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.

According to her lawyer, Maxwell spoke about “a hundred people,” answered every question, and withheld nothing.

“Miss Maxwell answered every single question. She never invoked privilege. She never declined to answer. She answered all the questions truthfully,” said attorney David Markus, who described her prison conditions as worse than what “we would keep animals in.”

But now, after years of shielding the powerful elites who flew on Epstein’s jet and partied at his private island—including Bill Clinton, who reportedly made 28 trips—Durbin has suddenly found religion on DOJ transparency.

In a letter co-signed with Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Durbin questioned why Deputy AG Blanche would meet with Maxwell himself rather than leave the task to line prosecutors.

He went as far as to warn about the potential of a “corrupt bargain” between Trump’s DOJ and Maxwell.

“What does the Justice Department want out of Ghislaine Maxwell? She’s a proven liar and sex trafficker. The timing of her meeting with Deputy Attorney General Blanche doesn’t pass the sniff test. They’re on notice—no political games here,” the Senate Judiciary Democrats wrote on X.

The letter reads as follows:

We are writing to follow up on Ranking Member Durbin’s initial inquiry of July 18, 2025, regarding information from Attorney General Bond’s reporting, including his July 7 memorandum calling the Trump Administration’s “lukewarm review of investigative holdings relating to Jeffrey Epstein.” Since that time, we have each since heard even more questions about the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) transparency and mismanagement of information as it relates to the Epstein/Maxwell investigation and prosecution.

On July 21, 2025 you stated on social media that “for the first time, the Department of Justice is reaching out to Ghislaine Maxwell to discuss the Epstein case.” You confirmed that this meeting took place in Florida on July 24, 2025, and continued the following day. While Ms. Maxwell is currently incarcerated in a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility serving a 20-year sentence, she has signaled interest in cooperating to discuss Epstein’s business crimes.

The purpose and timing of this meeting are perplexing. Ms. Maxwell was federally indicted and was tried in 2021 for aiding Mr. Epstein’s human trafficking of minors. DOJ prosecutors did not seek her cooperation at the time. Maxwell refused to plead guilty or participate in plea negotiations. Instead, she went to trial and was convicted. She has continued to assert her role in facilitating the abuse of minors by Mr. Epstein. In fact, during Ms. Maxwell’s sentencing, she made the following remarks:

“I acknowledge that I have been convicted of helping Jeffrey Epstein commit these crimes. The greatest regret of my life is that I ever met Jeffrey Epstein. . . . Epstein fooled all of those in his orbit. His victims considered him a godfather, mentor, benefactor, friend, lover. He is none of those things. . . . I hope that this brings the victims measure of peace and finality.”

In her public trial and sentencing, she was identified as Epstein’s key co-conspirator. During prosecution, DOJ prosecutors argued in court that her “willingness to brazenly lie under oath about her conduct, including some of the conduct charged in the indictment, strongly suggests that her motive has been and remains to avoid being held accountable for her crimes.”

This is highly unusual, if not unprecedented, for the Deputy Attorney General to conduct such an interview, rather than line prosecutors who are familiar with the details of the case and can readily determine the witness’s lying.

In their effort to overcome an extensive record and to manage multiple investigations, a federal jury conviction, and Ms. Maxwell’s history and DOJ allegations from this office, this act raises new questions of whether DOJ may be willing to overlook known bad acts as part of a reduced sentence or leniency.

During the trial, former lead DOJ appellate official informed immunity to speak with Ms. Maxwell, a prosectuor’s incentive to secure cooperation from alleged co-conspirators in criminal cases, who she has already been tried and convicted.

It seems likely this meeting is another tactic to distract from DOJ’s failure to fulfill Attorney General Bond’s commitment that the American people would “see” the Epstein files,” especially in light of credible reports that FBI actions helped to redact Epstein’s logs in which President Trump was mentioned but not Attorney General Bond or President Obama.

President that has since appeared in the files. As you know, Ms. Maxwell is currently pursuing an online grievance in her 2021 conviction for her role in the same crimes she is now offering to revisit.

Given her documented lying and her role in the earlier abuse, DOJ must explain its actions. Maxwell may not provide the best information or accurate information, in return for a pay-out or sentence commutation,” indeed, NewsNation TV noted to reporters the Friday she is “allowed to produce files.

Maxwell has repeatedly offered to declassify and “help save the secrets of your life” files and this may be the “first time” DOJ has reached out to Ms. Maxwell to ask serious questions about her Epstein administration activities. This is especially true if this is the first time DOJ instead of New York, reached out and promised Ms. Maxwell.

Due to the serious questions about the potential for a corrupt bargain between the Trump Administration and Ghislaine Maxwell, and the impact this would have on the victims and survivors of Jeffrey Epstein and Ms. Maxwell’s horrific abuses, we ask that you make the following public commitments:

  1. That DOJ will provide full transparency to the victims and survivors of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell and will respect the law decisions the Department makes regarding Ms. Maxwell’s appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court; and

  2. That DOJ will not offer a pardon or commutation of sentence to Ms. Maxwell in exchange for information or evidence for a pardon or commutation of sentence to herself, unless it is behalf to the White House in exchange for her cooperation in full.

The victims and survivors of Jeffrey Epstein have been repeatedly let down in the criminal justice system. This case was initially brought by the Trump Administration, where during a previous Administration, the Department entered into a favorable, “secret non-prosecution agreement with Epstein without alerting his numerous victims.”

This cannot happen again. Rather than repeating this deliberate move, DOJ should simply release the facts. Neither Attorney General Bond promised to do so.

We also ask that, in addition to the requests in Ranking Member Durbin’s July 18, 2025 letter, you provide the following information and materials no later than August 4, 2025:

  1. Please provide a detailed explanation of why DOJ believes Ms. Maxwell will be truthful now and/or “arguing in court about her” willingness to cooperate that will not be another rebranded version of her historic denials since this 2020 assessment by the Trump Administration.

  2. Please provide a detailed explanation of what information DOJ believes Ms. Maxwell possesses that has not been subject to negotiation since the public truth about Jeffrey Epstein that did not occur prior to her 2020 arrest and indictment.

  3. Please provide a detailed explanation of why DOJ concluded in the July 7 memorandum that there is “no incriminating client list” here before seeking to question Ms. Maxwell.

  4. Please identify the names and titles of every person present during the July 24-25, 2025 interviews of Ms. Maxwell.

  5. Please provide all recordings, transcripts, reports of investigations, FD-302s, or case notes from your interviews of Ms. Maxwell.

  6. Please provide all previous recordings, transcripts, reports of investigations, FD-302s, or case notes from prior interviews of Ms. Maxwell.

  7. Please provide the complete terms of the limited immunity proffer to Ms. Maxwell to secure her cooperation with the July 24-25, 2025 interviews.

  8. Please provide a complete description of any other agreement, oral or written, DOJ has entered into with Ms. Maxwell regarding this or any future interviews.

  9. Please provide a complete list of every DOJ unit that DOJ had your office pulled from to review the FBI’s redactions in the Epstein-related cases.

  10. Please provide the number of attorneys your office assigned to review the FBI’s redactions in the Epstein-related records and a calculation of personnel hours dedicated to this task.

  11. Please provide the Microsoft SharePoint online collaborative file that your office maintained that logged the mentions of President Trump and others in the Epstein-related records reviewed by DOJ and FBI.
