German swimming pools are grappling with a surge in sexual violence linked to migrants. At Barbarossabad pool in Gelnhausen, children have been targeted in disturbing attacks. Reports of such incidents are increasingly common across the country.
Christian Litzinger, the Christian Democrat Union (CDU) mayor of Gelnhausen, has drawn criticism for downplaying the issue. In an interview with German outlet Welt, he attributed the incidents to “high temperatures and frayed tempers,” dismissing their severity. His remarks have sparked significant backlash.
Gelnhausen pools have experienced a sharp increase in reports of inappropriate behavior by migrants. Local authorities face accusations of inaction, leaving victims without adequate protection. Young girls, in particular, have reported persistent harassment with little immediate recourse.
A group of girls at Barbarossabad reported being molested and groped by Syrian men. Despite notifying the lifeguard, no immediate action was taken. The victims were left to cope with the distressing situation on their own.
Pool manager Nils Tischer initially minimized the incidents, stating, “Since we couldn’t see exactly what happened, we sent the girls back into the water.” His response, reported by local media, has fueled widespread outrage. Parents and residents have condemned the lack of accountability.
Following repeated complaints from girls aged 11 to 17, police were eventually called. Victims identified Syrian men, aged 18 to 28, who groped them in the pool’s “lazy river.” Four suspects were detained, while a fifth remains at large.
The four suspects have been charged and banned from outdoor pools. Alice Weidel, co-leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), demanded their immediate deportation. The incident has intensified calls for stricter immigration policies.
Peter Harzheim, president of the Federal Association of German Swimming Champions (BDS), issued a rare warning to families, advising against visiting pools, particularly on weekends. This unprecedented advisory underscores the gravity of the crisis. Public safety concerns continue to escalate.
Some German media outlets have faced criticism for offering dubious explanations. In 2023, Die Zeit linked pool assaults to rising French fry prices. Others have cited climate change, despite evidence pointing to cultural and behavioral factors, with some migrants claiming “sexual emergencies” as justification.
Pool staff report frequent mass brawls, sexual harassment, and damaged facilities, often involving Arab and Chechen migrants. A 40-man brawl in Berlin’s Neukölln forced a pool closure, while a violent rampage in Celle saw youths assaulting swimmers and beating a woman.
Welt has pointed to a “macho culture” among some migrants as a key driver of tensions, finally offering an explanation that gets closer to the root of the problem.
The left-leaning German government plans to deploy police at pools to curb violence. AfD supporters argue this fails to address the root issue of unchecked migration.
