The world is on fire, but the nuclear superpowers still have an open communication line.
In the middle of the major escalation in the middle-east, with the war in the Ukraine still raging, it arises that US President Donald J. Trump has had today a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
Th information was first shared by Putin’s top aide Yuri Ushakov.
While the military confrontation between Israel and Iran has made the conversation ever-more urgent, the 50-minute call was also an opportunity for Putin to congratulate Trump on his birthday and Flag Day.

(In the meantime, Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelensky has posted to X complaining that ‘Right now, the tone of U.S.-Russia dialogue feels too warm’.)

Al Arabiya reported:
“Ushakov, quoted by the [Russian] agencies, said Putin condemned Israeli attacks on Iran and the two leaders did not rule out returning to discussions on Iran’s nuclear program.
Ushakov was also quoted as saying that Putin confirmed Russia’s readiness to press on with negotiations with Ukraine.
The agencies quoted Ushakov as saying the two presidents spoke for about 50 minutes. He described the talk as meaningful and useful.”

According to Ushakov, Putin informed Trump about his recent phone contacts with the president of Iran and the prime minister of Israel, and reminded Trump ‘of Russia’s proposal to seek mutually acceptable agreements on the Iranian nuclear issue’.
Sputnik reported:
“Trump assessed the situation in the Middle East as highly alarming. The presidents did not rule out a return to the negotiating track on the Iranian nuclear program.
Putin also informed Trump about the implementation of the Istanbul agreements reached in Turkey on June 2. Russia is ready to continue negotiations with the Ukrainian side, Putin said.
During the conversation, the leaders noted the wartime brotherhood of the two countries during World War II and expressed satisfaction with their current relationship, which allows for addressing pressing issues.”
Putin further said that Russia is ready to resume negotiations with Ukraine after June 22.
UPDATE: Trump posts on Truth Social about the call.
