Americans who want to formally give up their U.S. citizenship will now face a far lower fee after the State Department implemented a rule cutting the cost by roughly 80 percent.
Under the new rules, the fee to process a Certificate of Loss of Nationality (CLN) has been reduced from $2,350 to $450.
The change restores the fee to the same level the government charged when it first began requiring payment for citizenship renunciations in 2010.
The reduction was first announced in 2023 but only recently took effect under Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to the State Department, the fee had been increased to $2,350 in 2015 to cover administrative expenses as the number of Americans seeking to renounce their citizenship rose sharply.

Officials linked that surge in part to new tax reporting rules affecting Americans living overseas.
Data from the department showed renunciation requests climbing from 956 cases in 2010 to 3,436 in 2014.
Despite the reduction, the government says the new $450 fee still does not fully cover the actual cost of processing renunciation applications.
The process of formally renouncing U.S. citizenship involves several steps.
Applicants must appear in person before a U.S. consular officer at an embassy or consulate abroad, where they must confirm both verbally and in writing that they understand the consequences of renouncing citizenship.
Individuals must then take a formal oath of renunciation, after which the State Department reviews the request before issuing the Certificate of Loss of Nationality.
There are various reasons why one might give up their citizenship. The most commonly cited is the financial reporting requirements for Americans living abroad.
However, others may renounce it simply to make a political statement that they no longer want to be American.
The move was celebrated by advocacy groups representing so-called âAccidental Americans,â people who hold U.S. citizenship through birth but do not live in America.
âThe Association of Accidental Americans welcomes this decision, which acknowledges the necessity of making this fundamental right accessible to all,â the groupâs president, Fabien Lehagre, said in a statement.
According to the group, 8,755 Americans paid the previous $2,350 fee after the State Department first announced plans to lower the cost in 2023 but before the rule formally took effect.
