Cringe California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing scrutiny over a viral Atlanta appearance and a separate podcast remark in which he said he has “no clue” where his own birth certificate is.
During a recent book-tour event at Atlanta’s Rialto Center for the Arts before a largely Black audience, Newsom said he scored 960 on the SAT and told the crowd, “you’ve never seen me read a speech because I cannot read a speech,” framing the line in the context of his self proclaimed “dyslexia”.
He attempted to present it as self-deprecating, saying he was “not trying to impress” anyone and was “no better” than the audience, but conservative critics online paraphrased it as Newsom telling Black voters he “can’t read.”
The clip raced across X after being posted by right-leaning accounts, drawing high-profile backlash from users including rapper Nicki Minaj, who called the remarks racist and wrote that his way of “bonding with black ppl is to tell them how stupid he is & that he can’t read.”
Fox News host Sean Hannity reposted the video with a caption saying “@GavinNewsom Thinks a 960 SAT Makes Him ‘Like’ Black Americans. Let That Sink In.”
Newsom responded with a profanity-laced post on X accusing Hannity of ignoring Donald Trump’s alleged history of “racist comments” while feigning concern over Newsom’s remarks, and he dismissed the controversy as “MAGA-manufactured outrage” over his struggle with dyslexia.
Separately, on his “This Is Gavin Newsom” podcast in a discussion of the Republican-backed SAVE Act’s documentary-proof requirements, Newsom argued that finding a birth certificate can be a real hurdle for voters and remarked, “If you know where yours is, I have no clue where mine is,” while noting that many people instead would need a passport.
He likened such documentation rules to modern-day “Jim Crow” measures and highlighted that a large share of Black Americans do not have passports, typical leftist talking points that degrade Americans.
