The White House on Tuesday confirmed what President Donald Trump has been stating openly and unapologetically: acquiring Greenland is a top national security priority for the United States, with all options, including military force, remaining on the table.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, President Trump underscored the strategic urgency of Greenland’s location in the rapidly militarizing Arctic, warning that America’s adversaries are already exploiting the vacuum left by European inaction.

“I will say this about Greenland: We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security. It’s so strategic. Right now, Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place,” Trump said. “Denmark is not going to be able to do it—I can tell you that.”

Trump ridiculed Denmark’s token security gestures, noting that Copenhagen recently attempted to “boost” Arctic defenses by adding one additional “dog sled.”

“They thought that was a great move. It’s true—they thought that was a great move,” Trump said.

Dog sledding in Denmark primarily refers to the elite Sirius Dog Sled Patrol, a Royal Danish Navy unit that patrols remote Northeast Greenland.

“I’ll just say this: we need Greenland from the standpoint of national security, and the European Union needs us to have it—and they know that.”

The remarks triggered a sharp but hollow reaction from Jens Frederik Nielsen, who declared “that’s enough now,” dismissing U.S. control of the island as a “fantasy,” according to the BBC.

“No more pressure. No more insinuations. No more fantasies of annexation. We are open to dialogue. We are open to discussions. But this must happen through the proper channels and with respect for international law,” Nielsen added.

On Tuesday, the White House left no ambiguity.

The White House confirmed that President Trump and his national security team are actively discussing multiple pathways to acquiring Greenland, including the potential use of U.S. military power if necessary.

“Trump sees acquiring Greenland as a U.S. national security priority necessary to ‘deter our adversaries in the Arctic region,’” the White House said in a statement to Reuters.

“The president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the U.S. military is always an option at the commander-in-chief’s disposal,” the White House added.

During a contentious exchange on CNN, senior Trump adviser Stephen Miller made clear that this is not a new or off-the-cuff idea.

“It has been the formal position of the U.S. government since the beginning of this administration—frankly, going back into the previous Trump administration—that Greenland should be part of the United States,” Miller said. “The president has been very clear about that.”

During a tense exchange on CNN, senior Trump adviser Stephen Miller made it crystal clear that the administration’s position is not new—and not negotiable.

“It has been the formal position of the U.S. government since the beginning of this administration, frankly going back into the previous Trump administration, that Greenland should be part of the United States,” Miller said.

“Greenland has a population of 30,000 people,” Miller said. “The real question is: by what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? What is the basis of their territorial claim? What is their basis of having Greenland as a colony of Denmark?”

Miller emphasized that the United States, as the dominant power within NATO, bears responsibility for securing the Arctic against hostile regimes.

“To protect and defend NATO interests, obviously Greenland should be part of the United States,” Miller said. “Nobody’s going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland.”
