Bryan Kohberger, the 31-year-old convicted killer serving four life sentences for the brutal 2022 stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students, is reportedly throwing a fit over the type of bananas served in his maximum-security prison.
Kohberger, who pleaded guilty in a surprise deal in July to avoid the death penalty, has been at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution in Kuna since August.
This latest grievance is just one of at least five formal complaints he’s lodged about his prison conditions after slaughtering Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, and Madison Mogen as they slept in their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho.
According to retired homicide detective Chris McDonough, who spoke to the Daily Mail, Kohberger is unhappy with the prison’s bananas, claiming they’re “not the kind that he likes.”
“They’re not the kind that he likes,” McDonough said. “I’m not sure if that means they may have bruises on them and he doesn’t like that or if there is a particular type of banana that he likes. But he’s complaining about the food he’s getting.”
McDonough added, “You can’t make this stuff up, right? The guy is a quadruple killer and he’s complaining about his bananas not being the type that he likes.”
Prison officials have dismissed the complaint, with McDonough noting their response boils down to “well, deal with it.”
Kohberger’s prison complaints began with one about harassment from fellow inmates who yelled through vents at all hours, preventing him from sleeping. He requested a relocation due to the noise.
In another complaint, Kohberger detailed threats of sexual abuse, including one inmate allegedly saying he would “bitch f–k” him and another claiming “the only a– we’ll be eating is Kohberger’s.”
During an August housing placement hearing before a three-person panel, officials decided to keep Kohberger separated from the general population “for the protection of staff and residents, as well as for his protection,” as reported by the Idaho Statesman. Despite this, Kohberger objected to the type, size, and location of his cell.
McDonough, an expert in predatory behaviors, suggested Kohberger’s complaints stem from a desire for power and control, leveraging his infamous status.
The expert predicted that Kohberger is “going to keep pushing the envelope and pushing the boundaries as far as he can get them.”
“It’s about power and control,” McDonough said. “He was a nobody until he murdered four people… he was irrelevant to the world.”
“And now he’s Bryan Kohberger who has slaughtered four people. And, because he didn’t have to stand up in court and tell the world how brutal these crimes were, he holds the cards. And he’s trying to leverage that,” McDonough continued.
