British pop legend Elton John has said that President Trump could go down as one of the “greatest presidents in history” if his administration helps find a cure for the AIDS epidemic.
In an interview with Variety after leading a delegation to South Africa, the 78-year-old said that ending the epidemic would cement his place in history.
“Lindsey Graham said it was the best bang for your buck you could possibly get,” John said of finding a cure for AIDS.
“The bipartisan thing makes common sense. To see us come so far with the medical and scientific advances, and to think this is the only disease that can be completely cured in one’s lifetime,” he continued.
“President Trump has maybe solved the peace problem. If he wants to go down as one of the greatest presidents in history … if he ended AIDS, that would really be a feather in his cap.”

While John is not seen as an overtly political figure, he has repeatedly performed at the request of the Biden administration and previously refused to appear at President Trump’s 2016 inauguration.
However, John is said to have known Trump for years, and the men are on friendly speaking terms.
During a performance for Joe Biden back in 2023, the former president suggested that John had started the epidemic himself.

As an openly gay man, John has been among the world’s leading AIDS activists since the 1980s.
After several of his own friends died during the crisis, he founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992.
The foundation has raised hundreds of millions of pounds to fund treatment, prevention, testing, and stigma-reduction programs in more than 90 countries.
Although not fully cured, AIDS treatment in 2025 is highly advanced.
Modern drugs can push the virus to undetectable levels, stop it from spreading, and let patients live normally. Long-acting injections have made treatment easier, though these are not globally available.
However, a cure remains elusive. Scientists still can’t eliminate the hidden viral reservoirs, so research is focused on gene-editing and immune-based approaches.
