In an unsettling prediction that could spell the end of personal freedom behind the wheel, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has declared that within “20 plus years,” every car on the road will be fully autonomous, with human driving becoming a rare pastime similar to horseback riding today.

His vision, shared during a recent interview with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner, also foresees a sharp decline in private car ownership as Big Tech pushes for a driverless future dominated by ride-sharing giants.

“Humans are fallible, and I think there’s much less permissiveness for machines to make those kinds of mistakes, especially if those mistakes lead to fatality,” Khosrowshahi said on the “MD MEETS” podcast when asked about driverless vehicle accidents in the news.

“There’s no doubt that humans will be less safe than robots as this technology matures — no doubt whatsoever,” said Khosrowshahi. “So, should we allow humans to drive in the open road? I think it is a real question that societies are gonna ask themselves.”

Recent years have witnessed rapid developments in the autonomous vehicle space, with companies such as Tesla and Waymo leading the charge.

Tesla, however, recently suffered a major setback when a Florida jury slapped the company with a $242 million damages award, holding its Autopilot technology partially responsible for a fatal crash.

“Today’s verdict is wrong and only works to set back automotive safety and jeopardize Tesla’s and the entire industry’s efforts to develop and implement life-saving technology. We plan to appeal given the substantial errors of law and irregularities at trial,” Tesla said in a statement following the verdict.

Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana admitted that the company frequently “pulls back” to ensure safety, but chillingly suggested that society might have to accept some fatalities as the “cost of technological progress,” Breitbart News reported last month.

This push raises serious questions about freedom of movement.

In a world where Big Tech controls your ride, how much privacy and independence will be left?
