The legal troubles faced by former Congressman George Santos may not yet be over.
Santos, who was convicted of identity theft and wire fraud and sentenced to an absurdly harsh sentence of over seven years in prison, had his sentence commuted by the White House earlier this week.
However, the Republican district attorney in Naussau County, the area that Santos once represented, has refused to rule out filing charges against him.
“Since first learning of George Santos’ actions, I have been at the forefront of bringing him to justice,” Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said in a statement reported by NBC News.
“I am proud of the work my office has done, and the conviction achieved in partnership with the U.S. Attorney’s office.”
”While the office cannot comment on ongoing investigations, suffice it to say that I remain focused on prosecuting political corruption wherever it exists regardless of political affiliation.”
On her official “Meet the District Attorney” page, Donnelly boasts of being “the first prosecutor to launch an investigation into disgraced former Congressman George Santos and was instrumental in the federal prosecution that brought him to justice
The 37-year-old had served three months of his sentence before being released from prison last week.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump described Santos as a “rogue” but pointed out that many Democrats and leftists have not received any punishment for crimes that are much more severe.
He wrote:
George Santos was somewhat of a “rogue,” but there are many rogues throughout our Country that aren’t forced to serve seven years in prison. I started to think about George when the subject of Democrat Senator Richard “Da Nang Dick” Blumenthal came up again.
As everyone remembers, “Da Nang” stated for almost twenty years that he was a proud Vietnam Veteran, having endured the worst of the War, watching the Wounded and Dead as he raced up the hills and down the valleys, blood streaming from his face. He was “a Great Hero,” he would leak to any and all who would listen — And then it happened!
He was a COMPLETE AND TOTAL FRAUD. He never went to Vietnam, he never saw Vietnam, he never experienced the Battles there, or anywhere else. His War Hero status, and even minimal service in our Military, was totally and completely MADE UP.
This is far worse than what George Santos did, and at least Santos had the Courage, Conviction, and Intelligence to ALWAYS VOTE REPUBLICAN! George has been in solitary confinement for long stretches of time and, by all accounts, has been horribly mistreated. Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!

Santos has since thanked the president for giving him a “new chance at life.”
“His kindness, his humanity, and his generosity toward my family and me touched me deeply,” Santos said of Trump’s character.
