Remembering Bobby Powell. Marine, J6er and Journalist Who Fought to Tell the “Whole Truth”

Bobby Powell, a veteran journalist and U.S. Marine who became a pivotal witness in the January 6th trials, has passed away from a heart attack, his family confirmed on Friday, September 5, 2025. Powell was a relentless investigator who, in his own words, spent his final years fighting a system he believed was determined to stop him from telling “the whole truth” about the events at the U.S. Capitol.

In a powerful November 8, 2023, interview with Mel Hawley on the Justice in Jeopardy podcast, conducted from a D.C. rooftop with the Capitol in the background, Powell laid out the case he had been trying to make for years. “On January 6th, I was at the Capitol reporting the violence,” he explained, “and recorded two undercover federal agents attacking the building.” He detailed how he captured video of one agent pulling a window from its frame and another using a pole to hold the Columbus doors open, pushing people—including J6 defendant Nancy Barron—inside.

This footage became the centerpiece of his mission. “The interesting thing about these two gentlemen… is that their photographs have never appeared on the FBI’s wanted list,” Powell told Hawley. Despite providing the FBI with 29 minutes of high-definition video just days after the event, he said his evidence was ignored. “All six times that I have offered to [give the FBI all my footage], I have been denied,” he stated, a complaint he formally filed with the Department of Justice Inspector General.

His fight culminated in his testimony for defendants Nancy Barron, Ryan Zink and Rebecca Lavrenz. The experience, however, was one of profound frustration. Powell described how both judges made him swear to “tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,” only to prevent him from doing so.

“They would not allow me to do that because they kept on objecting,” Powell said. “I wasn’t allowed to mention the word Antifa. I wasn’t allowed to say undercover federal agents.” The prosecution, he claimed, fought for six hours to keep him off the witness stand entirely because his testimony was, in their words, “prejudicial to the government.”

The physical and emotional toll of these battles was immense. During the later trial of Rebecca Lavrenz, attorney Roger Roots confirmed that Powell suffered a “mild heart attack in the hallway of the federal courthouse just after leaving the witness stand.”

Powell’s commitment was absolute. Those who knew him said he had a huge heart and spent every last penny of his own to travel, investigate, and pursue the story. This selfless dedication left him with few personal resources.

The news of his passing was shared by his son, Adam, on Facebook and X. “My dad passed away from a heart attack,” he wrote, “and I’m struggling to cover the funeral expenses.”

This is Bobby’s son Adam, I’m here to let you know of Bobby’s passing. I never thought I’d have to ask for help like this, but here I am. My dad passed away from a heart attack, and I’m struggling to cover the funeral expenses. Every little bit helps, and I’m truly grateful for…

Bobby Powell’s final interviews serve as a testament to a man who, until his last breath, refused to be silenced. “Any time anybody wants me to come up here, I will come up here and I will tell the truth,” He vowed. His work leaves behind a legacy of a Marine who never abandoned his post in the fight for what he believed was right. Semper Fi.

To assist the Powell family during this difficult time, a fundraiser has been established to help with funeral costs. Those wishing to contribute can do so through the “Assist with Bobby’s Funeral Expenses” link shared by his family on social media.
