Besides the constant pounding by Geranium drones, loitering munitions and a plethora of cruise, ballistic and hypersonic missiles, the Russian forces continue to advance all over the enlarged frontline.

If in the southern Kherson and Zaporozhie there hasn’t been much progress, in eastern Donetsk the advances have been very consequential – and there’s also been huge movements in the north, where the Red army is actively carving a ‘buffer zone’ on Ukraine’s Kharkov and Sumy regions.

Today (21), the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the conquest (or, as they say, the ‘liberation’) of the settlement of Zaporozhye in Donetsk region (not to be confused with the Zaporozhie region previously mentioned).

It’s never too much to remind that Donetsk is the cradle of this war, along with the almost entirely conquered Luhansk region – the two oblasts form the ‘Donbas region’.

Sputnik reported:

“The Ukrainian Marine Corps suffered significant losses and was forced to abandon the settlement of Zaporozhye in the [Donetsk People’s Republic], which was liberated by the Russia’s Battlegroup Vostok.

[…] Russian forces conducted precision strikes on Ukrainian military airfield, drone production and storage facilities.

Heavy Ukrainian losses: Over 1,350 troops eliminated in the special military operation zone in the past 24 hours.

Air defense superiority: 4 JDAM bombs and 97 enemy drones shot down.”

The loss of Zaporozhye has led to changes in the outgunned, outmanned and outmaneuvered Ukrainian defending forces.

Slavyangrad reported:

“Almost simultaneously with the liberation of the settlement of Zaporozhye in the [Donetsk region], news came about the removal of Sergei Nayev from the post of commander of the tactical group ‘Ugledar’ of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The group itself was disbanded.”

Former commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Donbass, Nayev was sent to the front lines and ordered to hold the defense together in a sector of where the Russians are conducting a powerful offensive for criticizing the Kiev regime of Volodymyr Zelensky.

Nayev gave an interview in which he criticized Ukraine’s military and political leadership for being poorly prepared for military action against Russian forces, and denounced corruption at the highest levels of government.

Russian channels are having a field trip with the fact that in February, upon taking office, Lieutenant General Sergei Nayev stated that ‘the Ukrainian military [was] quite capable of reaching the 1991 borders and even creating a buffer zone around Ukraine [inside Russia]’.

Slavyangrad reported::

“Summing up his work, we can safely say that Mr. Nayev was better at making loud statements than at performing his immediate duties. From the end of February to June 21, 2025, the Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to lose 427 square kilometres of territory and 13 settlements in this direction – Konstantinopol, Dneproenergiya, Privolnoye, Volnoye Pole, Vesyoloye, Razliv, Bogatyr, Zelenoye Pole, Novopol, Otradnoye, Fedorovka, and Komar.

Zaporozhye became a kind of “demobilization chord” for Mr. Nayev.”
