French President Emmanuel Macron arrived Sunday in Greenland, marking the first visit by a foreign head of state since President Trump announced his interest in the territory earlier this year.

Macron was greeted in the capital of Nuuk by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and locals waving the territory’s red-and-white flags.

Macron began his six-hour visit aboard a Danish frigate for talks with Frederiksen and Nielsen.

According to the French government, the visit aimed to demonstrate “France’s and the European Union’s solidarity” with Greenland’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

”That’s not what allies do,” Macron said of Trump’s interest in taking the island.

Macron’s arrival follows Denmark’s repeated insistence that Greenland is “not for sale,” after Trump argued that the U.S. needs the territory for security reasons.

The visit, reportedly initiated at the request of Danish and Greenlandic leaders, was described by his office as “a signal in itself.”

A planned stop at a hydroelectric facility was canceled, though Macron did visit Mount Nunatarsuaq, a glacier about 30 kilometers from Nuuk, to observe the effects of so-called climate change.

The trip was celebrated by the European Democrats, a coalition of left-wing political parties, who described it as a show of strength against Trump’s “imperial fantasies.”

“A powerful symbol of the need to reaffirm the enduring ties between Greenland and the EU. Greenland is Europe,” the party wrote on the X platform.

Respecting the right to self-determination, we must ensure its future is aligned with a democratic EU—not with Trump’s aggressive, imperial fantasies.

Greenland is not part of the European Union, but instead classified as an overseas territory.

In a visit to the island earlier this year, Vice-President J.D. Vance said the Danish government had not “done a good job by the people of Greenland” and were failing to protect the island’s strategic and military interests.

President Trump leads America with peace through strength, and that means showing strength when you have to.
