In a riveting segment for her show Going Rogue with Lara Logan, she takes viewers into the steamy jungles of Panama, specifically up Ancon Hill—once a vital U.S. military observation post during the building of the Panama Canal.
Lara Logan: Going rogue with Lara Logan is on the road. On the road in Panama… And we’re coming up here right up on the entrance of a tunnel system that’s inside this hill that overlooks the city of Panama.
This is called Ancon Hill. And it was a critical strategic point for the US during the building of the canal to oversee the construction, but also for security security.
So there is supposed to be a tunnel system and command center that go all the way deep inside this hill. At the top, you’re about 650 feet above sea level. I’m going to show you the entrance here. It’s not hard to see.
What they built was vast. We don’t know what’s going to happen to all of this infrastructure now. This was handed back to Panama. Well, handed to Panama because really it was built by the US under an agreement which put the US in charge of security in this area.
So Jimmy Carter was the one who gave it to Panama in the late 1970s. And then, very interestingly, the US spent the next 20 years training Panamanians to take over operation of the canal.
The Chinese have been moving in. They They officially got the legal tender for a cruise ship terminal. They’ve pretty much taken over two ports that were really being run by Hutchison, a company out of Hong Kong. But after Taiwan (Hong Kong) was handed back or taken back by China, those companies now are not free of Chinese influence anymore, of course, as always happens.
China has been expanding its influence culturally in the financial sector, in the banking sector, and of course, when it comes to the strategic infrastructure, from S place. And so this is a big change. And some people welcome it, and some people criticize it.
The Chinese certainly have their tentacles throughout the media, so they’re very good at messaging on it. But we’ve learned a lot on our trip. And thanks to the Gateway Pundit that supported us. First-hand independent reporting on the ground.
