On Thursday, Sean Parnell, Assistant Secretary of Defense, released a memo ordering the removal of all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) media materials from the Department of Defense (DOD).
According to the memo sent by Parnell, by March 5, 2025, all DOD websites and social media accounts “must take all practicable steps, consistent with records management requirements, to remove all DoD news and feature articles, photos, and videos that promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).”
“All articles, photos, and videos removed from DoD websites and social media platforms must be archived and retained in accordance with applicable records management policies.”
The memo comes in response to President Trump’s Executive Orders to root leftist ideology out of the military and prioritize lethality.
In January, Trump signed the “Restoring America’s Fighting Force” executive order and the “Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness” executive orders, which direct every element of the U.S. military to “operate free from any preference based on race or sex” and root out gender insanity and made up pronoun usage, respectively.
The directive applies to all DOD websites and social media accounts except for content “required by law to be publicly available.
The memo explains, “DEI content includes but is not limited to information that promotes programs, concepts, or materials about critical race theory, gender ideology, and preferential treatment or quotas based upon sex, race or ethnicity, or other DBI-related matters with respect to promotion and selection reform, advisory boards, councils, and working groups.”
“Content requiring removal also includes that which is counter to merit-based or color-blind policies (e.g., articles that focus on immutable characteristics, such as race, ethnicity, or sex) or promotes cultural awareness months as outlined in Secretary Hegseth’s January 31, 2025, Memorandum, “Identity Months Dead at DoD.”
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced the end of identity months at the DoD in January.
Guidance from the Secretary of Defense: “Identity Months Dead at DoD”
Our unity and purpose are instrumental to meeting the Department’s warfighting mission. Efforts to divide the force – to put one group ahead of another – erode camaraderie and threaten mission execution.
Going forward, DoD Components and Military Departments will not use official resources, to include man-hours, to host celebrations or events related to cultural awareness months, including National African American/Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Pride Month, National Hispanic Heritage Month, National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and National American Indian Heritage Month. Service members and civilians remain permitted to attend these events in an unofficial capacity outside of duty hours.
Installations, units, and offices are encouraged to celebrate the valor and success of military heroes of all races, genders, and backgrounds as we restore our warrior culture and ethos. We are proud of our warriors and their history, but we will focus on the character of their service instead of their immutable characteristics.
This guidance is effectively immediately.
